Not a photo!

If it seems like this was an enormous improvement in quality as compared to the last portrait I did, it's primarily because of the better reference image. I seriously had a blast painting every last goddamn detail. A lot of the texture in his skin (cheeks, neck, etc.) was created with a large spatter brush.

If you look at the large version of the file, the hair and beard look the most obviously painted. I was actually somewhat displeased with the beard.

Virtually all the shading was done with the burn tool, alternating between midtones and highlights to produce the tone I wanted; but when that produced a color a little too brown (usually), I selected a reddish color and painted over the area with the color blending mode on (5% opacity).

I didn't actually use many techniques I haven't used before. It was just patience and a better photo that made this one look good. I am very pleased with it.
